Little Mead chickens

Sorry I have not updated this for a long time, thing have been a little lively at Little Mead.
Sadly our good friend Lilly is no longer with us and died from a nasty illness.
Bluebell was very lonely.

Amazingly we were offered two beautiful new birds from wales,

They are called Sarah and Mathilda.
They have settled in very well and have made friends with Bluebell.

EGGS EGGS EGGS..

Today was a landmark day, Bluebell laid her first egg over the weekend. ( well according to chicken egg-spert Suzanne, it was Bluebell)
We gave it to Ms Daykin to have for her tea.

Will and Jade are doing a great job of caring for us. Will is even singing to us... 'Chick, chick, chicken, lay a little egg for me'

We can officially introduce ourselves now...
We can now offically introduce ourselves...
My name is Lily, I am the ginger one or honey coloured. I am in charge. I am very keen on grapes.
My name is Bluebell, I am very dark in colour with just a little ginger collar. I am the quiet one.

We arrived at Little Mead Primary school on Monday 8th November 2010. We have settled in to our new surroundings very quickly. Pat Scott has been looking after us this week. We have been well looked after and she has been bringing us treats of grapes every day.

All the children in the school have been out to visit us. They have been busy selecting names for us, drawing pictures and designing an egg box logo(thats for when we start laying eggs.)
There is a board in the school where all the children can see pictures of us and keep up to date with our egg laying. Although we have not laid any eggs yet. We do need to settle in for a little while!
We have been out of our cage into the garden to wander about under the supervision of Pat Scott.
We also went to assembly on Friday - helped by Pat Scott and Suzanne Hedger. We were well behaved and did not make a mess!!

Next week we are going to be cared for by year 5/6 class JR.

Not a very nice morning for our girls to arrive. It was very windy and a little damp. We all waited anxiously for their arrival. At 10 o'clock the man from Omlet came with our new chickens. He put together their new home and they prepared to settle in.
He explained to the school council how to care for the chickens and what needed to done each week. It all seems very straight forward.
After clipping their wings(we do not want to lose them too quickly) they did not seem to be bothered by all the fuss, they were put into their new home - the eglu.

Our girls are very pretty indeed and await the naming ceremony on Friday. All the children in the school have thought of a name and two names will be picked from these. The announcement will be in assembly on Friday.

They are very calm but did not want to go into their little house at the end of the day. I hope they are not stubborn birds or we might have to have words.

We await the arrival of Miss pepperpot and Gingernut Rooster.

Things are becoming very 'egg-citing at Little mead Primary School, as we await the arrival of two chickens.
The chickens are going to live in a new section of our school garden. We have already laid the foundations for the run, and our chickens are due to arrive on 8th November 2010, along with their new home.

We are hoping to involve all the children throughout the school in caring and feeding the chicken.
